UNDERGRADUATE INTERDISCPLINARY MINOR IN PEACE & CONFLICT STUDIES
This minor includes a required core interdisciplinary course and a variety of electives from six colleges at the University of Utah. Courses focus on conflict theory, war and terrorism, just war theory, the history of peace efforts and nonviolent social movements, community-based conflict management and resolution, and human rights.
PROCESS TOWARD A MAJOR:
The Peace and Conflict Studies Steering Committee met on May 1 to consider an almost-complete proposal for an undergraduate major. The main pillars of this major will be a multidisciplinary introductory course, a set of core electives (including some new courses to be developed), an internship or field experience, and a rotating capstone course. These features are based upon our survey of best practices in similar program around the world. At the same time, the major will encourage students to participate in other programs associated with the Center and with Peace and Conflict Studies. We now have 15 graduates from the minor and regularly enroll 25-30 students. Also, we are pleased that a number of our alums are already pursuing positions in areas such as community mediation, human rights advocacy, and humanitarian work. We anticipate development of a major which will attract about 50 students. We will be preparing key parts of the proposed major, including a multidisciplinary introductory course, during the 2009-10 academic year in order to secure the necessary administrative and faculty approvals for a fall 2011 launch.
